HIGHWAY 85 PROJECT BEGINS IN SEDALIA AREA DOUGLAS COUNTY – The widening and reconstruction of U.S. 85 is underway, just north of Sedalia. Work
includes widening the highway in concrete from two to four lanes (1/2 mile), new median construction, drainage
improvements, landscaping, signing and striping. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) also will be
completing earthwork and relocating utilities just south of Sedalia. Traffic impacts will be minimal. However, minor stops, primarily to allow construction vehicles in and out of
the project area, can be expected between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A reduced 40 mph speed limit will
remain in effect through the widening work zone for the duration of the project. Most of the reconstruction will occur outside the current traffic lanes. The first phase involves building the new
northbound lanes, just east of the existing highway. When completed, all traffic then will be switched onto the new
northbound lanes. The old highway then will be removed and the new southbound lanes will be constructed during the
second phase. Sema Construction Inc. of Centennial, CO. is the contractor for the $2.8 million project, which is scheduled for
completion in November 2007. “This widening is part of our long-term plan to construct an efficient, four-lane facility between the Highlands
Ranch area and Castle Rock,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Carrie DeJiacomo. “And as part of this project, we’re
relocating a number of utilities in preparation for the next widening project to the south.” For the duration of the project, CDOT will provide updated lane closure and construction information, as
necessary, via the weekly lane closure report, traffic advisories and on the website at
www.southi25.com. Motorists also are reminded to please
Slow for the Cone Zone, stay alert and pay attention to and obey all work
zone/advisory signs and flaggers. Traffic information about this or other CDOT projects is on the cotrip.org website or by calling 511 statewide,
(303) 639-1111 in the Denver area or (877) 315-ROAD elsewhere in Colorado.
