Construction Completed!

The 5th Street Bridge was open to the public on July 13, 2001. The town of Castle Rock and CDOT personnel hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the successful project which now provides the community with another option of east/west movement across I-25. You can now view the completed structure!

May 2001 - April was another productive month on the project, PCL was able to complete the placement of bridge rail and sidewalk on the bridge. Additionally, the check dams on Plum Creek were completed. PCL also continued to work on the roadway approaches that tie in to the bridge. In May, all work is dependent on good weather. It is anticipated that with cooperative weather conditions, PCL will finish the bridge, this includes erecting the fence, sealing the deck, and structural coating. Following the completion of the bridge, CDOT plans to pave the roadway approaches on May 16th, after that, landscaping and clean-up will begin.

April 2001 - 5th Street over I-25 in Castle Rock, continues to move along smoothly.

During March much work was accomplished. Early in March, PCL worked on forming the steel for the deck and the top portion of the abutments. On March 23, 2001, they were able to pour the deck and the abutments. Since the pours, they have been working to remove the forms used to place the concrete and have started placing the embankment for the approaches to the bridge.

April will also be a busy month for this project. PCL plans to pour the sidewalk, barrier, curb, and gutter on the bridge. They also intend to install lighting, backfill abutments, and continue to build the road base for the approaches. Late in the month, asphalt paving is scheduled.

March 2001 - Currently, PCL is installing deck panels over the girders; this work should be completed by March 9th and will include some night work. Additionally, some drainage work is being performed along Park Street approaching the bridge. The majority of drainage work needed along 5th Street between Jerry Street and I-25 has been completed, including the addition of a block retaining wall on the South side of the roadway.

A major milestone is scheduled for early this spring as PCL intends to pour the bridge deck during the final two weeks of March. No lane closures will be utilized for this work. Instead, traffic will be moved over slightly to accommodate the paving and pumping operations and to provide a safer work environment for the traveling public and the workers.

First Phase Construction - The contractor began construction in September 2000. The initial work consisted of construction of an access road from southbound I-25, south of the Wolfensberger Interchange, to the Plum Creek channel area immediately adjacent to the highway.

Initial stages of bridge construction include driving piles for pier and abutments foundations, construction of bridge abutments, pier foundations, pier columns, and pier caps. Both bridge piers are located in the area between I-25 and the west bank of Plum Creek and will be accessed from I-25 using the access road.

Once the bridge substructure was completed, girders were erected. The erection of girders over I-25 involved a detour of I-25 traffic to prevent lifting girders over live traffic. Following the placement of the girders, deck forms were installed and the concrete deck will be formed and poured.
