History & Purpose

The 5th Street Overpass project was an Early-Action Project involving the construction of a new bridge between 5th Street and Park Street over I-25. The project originated as an independent utility need requested by Douglas County.

A CDOT corridor feasibility study, prepared in 1995, analyzed the conditions at the I-25 Wolfensberger Interchange. The study recommended an overpass at 5th Street to relieve Wolfensberger Interchange of much of its local through traffic. This additional overpass will help reduce congestion at all of the Castle Rock area interchanges and thereby improve safety, accessibility, and the efficiency of mobility through the I-25 Corridor and within the Town of Castle Rock.

The overpass was located and designed to operate independently and in conjunction with the improvements being designed at the Wolfensberger Road Interchange.

The overpass recommendation was based on the following benefits

* Reduces traffic through the Wolfensberger Interchange
* Reduces congestion on Wolfensberger Road and Wilcox Street
* Consistency with DRCOG, Douglas County, and Town of Castle Rock plans

Design and Engineering

The Design for the 5th Street Overpass began in late 1998.

The design consists of two through lanes, one in each direction, connecting 5th Street east of I-25 to Park Street on the west side of I-25. The project includes an interstate overpass structure and local street improvements at the project connection points. Please view our Project Description page for a more detailed description of the design and the project elements.

The Design and Engineering for the 5th Street Overpass was completed by summer 2000.

Construction

The final construction plans and specifications were packaged and released for public advertisement on July 13, 2000. CDOT awarded the contract in late August 2000.

After the award, the contractor was given a "Notice to Proceed". A pre-construction meeting and a utility coordination meeting followed. Construction began on schedule in September 2000 and was to be completed by September 2001. Construction was completed early, in July 2001.
