History & Purpose

The Wolfensberger Interchange project is
an Early-Action Project that will redesign and reconstruct portions of the Wolfensberger Interchange to improve its safety, functionality, and capacity. Early-Action Projects are projects that are completed on an accelerated schedule in order to address safety issues as soon as possible.

The Wolfensberger Interchange project originated as an independent utility need that was requested by Douglas County.

A complete interchange improvement was recommended in the CDOT 1995 Feasibility Study for the I-25 and Wolfensberger Interchange. The study also recommended an overpass at 5th Street to relieve Wolfensberger Interchange of much of its local through traffic and lower its future capacity requirements.

The inter-regional commuters identified safety issues for the I-25 at Wolfensberger Interchange in the South Front Range Corridor Assessment Study completed in April 1998.

Design and Engineering

The Wolfensberger Interchange project was begun in late 1998, and has been designed to operate independently and in conjunction with the 5th Street Overpass now in construction over I-25 in Castle Rock. The interchange design process was delayed until completion of the 5th Street Overpass design in July 2000. Since July, the Wolfensberger Interchange project has proceeded steadily through the final design phase.

The interchange improvement was designed in accordance with the recommendations of the 1995 Feasibility Study, and includes additional laneage for ramps, roadways, and bridge structures within the project area. The design process was coordinated with the South I-25 Corridor and US 85 Corridor EIS.

The design for the Wolfensberger Interchange was completed late 2000. The project began construction in October 2001.
