Construction June through December 1998

The I-25, Meadows/Founders Parkway Interchange Project began in June 1998. Phase 1 was completed in December and included construction of the south half of the new bridge, storm sewer, utility work, underground wiring for lighting and traffic signals, concrete pavement, and ramp construction. The majority of the embankment was placed and some of the old ramps were removed. The old bridge was removed during December allowing work to begin on Phase 2.

Work on Phase 2 of the interchange reconstruction at the intersection of I-25 and Meadows/Founders continued through the winter as weather allowed. Phase 2 work included the north half of the new bridge, reconstruction of the pavement on Meadows and Founders Parkways, and completion of the new traffic signals and lighting.

Construction January through May 1999

In February the work focused on construction of the north half of the bridge foundation. This included the block abutment walls on the north side of the new bridge, concrete footings atop the walls, and pier work in the median of I-25.

The work continued on guardrails, retaining walls, and final drainage items. The sound walls were completed in April.

At the end of February, traffic lanes were moved along Meadows/Founders to allow the contractor to prepare the roadway for new concrete pavement.

During the months of March, April, and into May, the concrete paving contractor replaced the pavement for westbound traffic along Meadows and Founders Parkways. The approaches to the north half of the bridge, curb, gutter, and sidewalks were completed as well.

The electrical contractor completed work on the lighting and new traffic signals allowing the new southbound off-ramp to be opened to traffic.

Crews prepared to place the concrete deck on Phase 2 of the bridge. On Friday, March 28, ironworkers began installing the reinforcing steel (see photo).

The new southbound off-ramp was opened and the old ramp totally removed. Crews re-graded the areas between the ramps and I-25 and covered them with topsoil and native grass seed. (See photo)

The north half of the bridge was opened and the interchange was made fully operational. Work crews finalized the remaining finish work items including sidewalks and medians, sign installations, striping, slope paving, and concrete painting in July and early August.
