Project Description

Location

The project is located along I-25 between the Lincoln Avenue Interchange and the Castle Pines Parkway Interchange. The climbing lanes are located on the outside edge of I-25 in each direction.

Detailed Improvement Description

Minor Widening and Pavement Rehabilitation

The Climbing Lanes, Phase I project consists of minor widening to each side of I-25 adding a 3.6-meter (12-foot) climbing lane for slow moving vehicles in each direction as well as associated pavement rehabilitation. The climbing lanes and shoulders are constructed in concrete and tined* to facilitate roadway drainage and to ensure traction in poor weather. The project includes a middle concrete barrier dividing directions of travel. (*see our 'Glossary')

With the addition of the two climbing lanes, I-25 will consist of six lanes from Castle Pines Parkway north to the Denver Technological Center.

Typical Section of I-25 for Climbing Lanes I

Other issues that were addressed during the design process include hydraulics, erosion, noise mitigation, archaeological/paleontological, utilities, traffic, and construction sequencing.

The design was carefully coordinated with the South I-25 Corridor and US 85 Corridor EIS so as not to preclude any of the options for improving I-25 determined necessary by the EIS:
